Class Attendance
Tip. If your require attendance, your syllabus must state how it will be tracked. Similarly, if participation is graded, the criteria must be stated in the syllabus. See Syllabus Policy.
To succeed, students must show up and participate in class. CU expects students to do both, whether attendance is graded or not. CU recognizes there will be occasions when students must miss classes and assignments, and our attendance policy is designed to guide your decisions about absences. Here are some of the main points:
- You have the right to ask for verification of anticipated or emergency absences.
- It’s the student’s responsibility to verify their absence(s), not yours.
- You are not obligated to accommodate students with unexcused absences. Students with verified disabilities should be accommodated, however, following Disability Services Policy.
- Whether excused or unexcused, lengthy class absences may dictate that you consult with the absentee student about dropping your course, you do not have to give an Incomplete (see Grading Policies).
- Your syllabus should clearly detail assignment dates, attendance and participation requirements and (if any) grading criteria.
- You or your students can appeal your department chair for an excused or unexcused absence judgment, or an accommodation requested or made for an absence.
