Syllabus Guidelines

A benefit to you and your students

It's difficult to overestimate the benefits of a well constructed syllabus: it can minimize student confusions, ameliorate rumors about your methods and policies, and transfer student's cognitive efforts from understanding the course requirements to understanding course content.

Several seminal syllabus success strategies

  • Review your syllabus with students during the first class; don't just hand it out.
  • Anticipate students' concerns, questions, and misconceptions - and answer them.
  • Check Downtown Campus' syllabus policy for must-have and should-have inclusions.
  • If you change any policy, assignment, or date during the course, notify your students in advance, in writing.

Use Downtown Campus' online syllabus tool to guide your development of the Ultimate Syllabus for your class. It contains almost every syllabus topic you would want include, including all of the required ones, and sample verbiage and forms for each topic.

Sylla-Quiz. Some instructors have a quiz or assignment about syllabus information, believing that its information is just as vital to classroom success as the course content.
