What Every Instructor Should Know
Grading Policies
Substantial Incompletes: You don't have to give an incomplete to someone who has done little work in your course, you may give them an "F." An Incomplete is for those who have completed a substantial amount of passing work. In CLAS, for example, "substantial" is 75% of the coursework.
CU has a system-wide grading policy that all faculty must follow. You can review the entire policy at your leisure, but here are three points worth highlighting:
- You can employ a plus and minus grading system (A-, B+) if that system is used in your school or college. There are no A+ , F+, or F- grades.
- Any grade above "F" may be regarded as passing.
Check the CU system policy before each semester, as well as your school's grading policies.
Get the point(s). If you establish a point system for assigning grades (e.g., 93-100 = A) and have percentages for different types of work (project = 50% of grade, test = 30%) you should have a point system established for scoring the percentage items. (e.g. project = 0 - 50 points)
